Gaza/Palestine (FRANCE 24 with AP and AFP) – August 26, 2025: At least 20 Palestinians, including five journalists, were killed when Israeli forces struck Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis on Monday, according to Gaza’s health officials. The attack hit one of the few hospitals in southern Gaza that remains even partially functional amid the ongoing war.

Civil Defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal confirmed that an explosive drone was launched at the hospital, followed by an air raid that killed civilians and media workers.

“So far, we count 20 martyrs — among them five journalists and a member of the civil defence,” he said. The victims included contributors to Al Jazeera, Reuters, and the Associated Press.

Mohammad Salama, a cameraman with Al Jazeera, was killed. The network condemned what it described as a deliberate attempt to silence reporting. Mariam Dagga, 33, a freelancer for the Associated Press, lost her life. AP said it was “deeply shocked and saddened” by her death. Hussam al-Masri, a Reuters contractor, was killed, while his colleague Hatem Khaled was seriously wounded. Reuters confirmed it is seeking immediate medical help for the injured journalist.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate also identified Moaz Abu Taha and Ahmad Abu Aziz as among the victims.

Since the conflict began in October 2023, press freedom groups estimate that over 240 journalists have been killed in Gaza — making it one of the deadliest wars for media workers in modern times.

Israeli Military Response

The Israeli army confirmed it carried out operations near the hospital but insisted its target was militants allegedly using the facility. “The IDF regrets harm to uninvolved persons and does not intentionally target journalists,” the military said, adding that an initial review had been ordered.

Israel has repeatedly struck or raided medical centers during the war, claiming militant activity without offering public proof.

Chaos at the Hospital

Footage recorded after the strike showed smoke, debris, and frantic rescue efforts. Civilians carried bloodied and dismembered bodies into the emergency ward.

One witness described the horror as a body dangled from an upper floor of the damaged hospital building. A female medical worker, covered in blood and with a heavily bandaged leg, was rushed inside on a stretcher.

With Gaza’s health system already collapsing, Nasser Hospital had been one of the last lifelines for the wounded and starving. Its destruction further deepens the humanitarian crisis as famine spreads across the enclave.

Wider War Context

Earlier this month, six other journalists — including four from Al Jazeera — were killed near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Israel later accused one of them, Anas al-Sharif, of being part of a Hamas cell, a claim disputed by media advocacy groups.
