Judgement Passed on Complaints Against Samaa TV

Lahore, 13th August: Judgement has been passed by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Council of Complaints regarding the case of Samaa TV showing inappropriate content on its channel, specifically re-enactment of sex crimes.

According to reports, the PEMRA Council of Complaints, lead by Barrister Ahmed Pansota, has passed judgment in the case of Samaa TV wherein the company was accused of three offenses, two of which were that it was showing inappropriate, obscene, and vulgar content on its news channel, and allegations of sexual harassment in the workplace.

According to the complainant, airing inappropriate content violated Rule 9(2) of the Electronic Media Code of Conduct, 2015, wherein re-enactment of sex crimes to show on TV was not permissible.

PEMRA adopted a comprehensive process to investigate the matter to its full extent, and three persons, namely Barrister Scheherezade Shehryar, Barrister Maryam Salman, and Barrister Maryam Hayat, nominated and led by Barrister Ahmed Pansota, were appointed to look into it.

The council deliberated the matter, analyzing it from all angles, and the following conclusions were reached:

  • All complaints against Samaa TV were to be dismissed since no content it aired on its channel, which may seem disturbing to some audiences, violated Code 9 of the Electronic Media (Program and Advertisement) Code of Conduct, 2015.
  • This committee could not investigate the accusations of sexual harassment since that didn’t come under the purview of the COC.

The final judgment, passed by Barrister Ahmed Pansota, stated that TV channels are allowed to air programs that raise awareness on current social issues and may use their right of freedom of speech, as long as it falls within the restrictions of the law.
