Kaavan, the elephant, bids farewell to Pakistan

Kaavan, a Sri Lankan elephant, who is living in Pakistan since 1985 will soon be released to a highly revered animal sanctuary in Cambodia.

According to details, the federal government has decided to relocate Kaavan, the elephant, from Marghazar Zoo, Islamabad to Cambodia on orders of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

An eight-member committee of experts on Friday recommended sending Kaavan the elephant to the 25,000-acre wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia.

On June 9, an eight-member committee was constituted by the Chairman of Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), Dr Anis Rehman for suggesting suitable sanctuaries for the relocation of Kaavan and other animals in Marghazar Zoo.

The elephant was gifted by the Sri Lankan government to Pakistan shortly after his birth. While he became an icon in Pakistan and was well-loved by the public, the conditions he was kept in increasingly deteriorated, making him look visibly distressed.
