Turkey and Qatar reach agreement on ensuring security at Kabul's main airport

Sept 5, 2021: Ariana Afghan Airlines resumed some flights to Afghanistan between Kabul and three major provincial cities on Saturday.

Ariana airlines airline said in a statement on its Facebook page that flights had started between Kabul and the western city of Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan and Kandahar in the south. Ariana Afghan Airlines is proud to resume its domestic flights.

Earlier, Qatar’s ambassador to Afghanistan said a technical team was able to reopen Kabul airport to seek assistance, according to Qatar’s Al Jazeera news channel.

According to reports from Al Jazeera, the runway at the Kabul airport has been repaired with the help of Afghan authorities, in another small step towards a return to normalcy after the turmoil of the past three weeks.

The reopening of the Kabul airport, an important lifeline to both the outside world and Afghanistan’s mountainous terrain, has been a top priority for the Taliban as they seek to restore peace after the August 15 power take over by the Taliban in Kabul.

Kabul airport has been closed since the collapse of a large-scale US-led airlift evacuation operation carrying its citizens, other Westerners and Afghans helping Western countries.

The end of the thousands’ withdrawal from Kabul marks the final withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan after 20 years of war.
