Karachi, 28th August: Karachi records at least 19 deaths in various rain-related incidents, as the Pakistani city recorded its highest downpour in a day since 1967, according to officials on Thursday.

According to reports, civic life in Karachi has come to a halt after torrential rains hit the city. The city is submerged in water and many areas continue to face power outages.

At least 19 people have lost their lives as per the latest reports after the city recorded the highest rainfall in 24 hours.

The Met department said Karachi received 223.5 mm of rain in just 12 hours, the highest amount of rain ever recorded in a single day in the city, Dawn news reported.

The previous 24-hour record was on July 26, 1967, when 211.3 mm was recorded at Masroor base.

Weather forecasters have said the rain in the past three days in Karachi have broken 89-year-old records for the city.

The Sindh government has declared an emergency in the city, where Army and Navy have been deployed for the rescue and relief operations.

Reportedly, many major roads in the city witnessed severe traffic jams and several areas of Karachi also experienced power outages. Some areas of the city have been without power for more than 10 hours.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that his government can not abandon the people of Karachi at the time of crisis. Taking to Twitter PM Khan said that his government is fully aware of the devastation brought about by the rainfall.

 

Prime Minister wrote, “I am personally monitoring the relief and rescue operations, and am in constant contact with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) chairman and Sindh Governor for regular updates.”

He further added that he had directed the NDMA to provide emergency medical assistance, food, and shelter to all those people who are stranded in such a situation.

Hence Khan announced a plan for a permanent solution to the problems caused by floods by cleaning of nullahs, fixing of the sewage system & resolving the huge challenge of water supply to the ppl of Karachi.

Earlier, hundreds of Pakistan Army troops backed by helicopters had to rush to affected areas to assist the local rescue and relief services having inadequate resources and expertise to cope with the current emergency situation.
