Pyongyang (FRANCE 24 / AFP): North Korean leader Kim Jong-un presided over an emotional ceremony in Pyongyang where he honored troops who fought alongside Russian forces in Ukraine’s Kursk region, and paid tribute to those killed in action.
State media photographs released Friday showed Kim kneeling before portraits of dead soldiers, laying medals and flowers in their memory, and embracing grief-stricken families and survivors. The ceremony was staged at the Workers’ Party headquarters, where the names and images of the fallen were prominently displayed.
In his address, Kim praised the men who returned from the battlefield as “heroes” who endured a “life-and-death struggle in a foreign land.”

Deployment and Casualties
According to South Korean and Western intelligence assessments, Pyongyang deployed more than 10,000 soldiers to support Moscow in 2024, sending both manpower and weaponry, including long-range rocket systems and artillery shells.
Seoul estimates at least 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed, with several thousand more wounded, during operations to help Russia push back Ukraine’s cross-border offensive into Kursk last year.
Kim personally bestowed the honorary title of “DPRK Hero” on several officers for what state media described as “distinguished achievements in overseas operations.”

Russia-North Korea Axis Strengthens
The deployment of North Korean forces came after Ukrainian troops launched a surprise incursion into Russian territory in August 2024, briefly seizing dozens of villages. With reinforcements from Pyongyang, Moscow retook all the occupied areas.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has since lauded the North Korean presence in Kursk, calling their role “heroic.” Meanwhile, Washington has warned that Russia is rewarding Pyongyang with technological support, including assistance linked to satellites and long-range missile development.
Despite recent high-profile diplomacy by the US, the war in Ukraine grinds on, with North Korea now openly acknowledging both its participation and battlefield losses for the first time.
