The Lahore High Court has directed authorities not to harass Sarbjeet Kaur, an Indian Sikh pilgrim who embraced Islam and adopted the name Noor Bibi, after marrying Naseer Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura.
Justice Farooq Haider of the Lahore High Court heard a petition seeking protection for Noor Bibi (formerly Sarbjeet Kaur), Naseer, a resident of Sheikhupura.
In the petition, the applicant stated that the Indian pilgrim had come to Pakistan for religious rituals and later embraced Islam of her own free will before contracting marriage with Naseer. The petition alleged that on 8 November, police officials conducted an illegal raid on the couple’s residence and attempted to pressure the woman into ending her marriage.
According to the plea, the woman converted to Islam and married entirely by choice, and the police had no legal authority to raid the house or interfere in her personal decisions.
Following the arguments, the Lahore High Court ordered the police to stop harassing Noor Bibi and her husband, and directed officials to act strictly in accordance with the law.
Further proceedings will continue on the next date of hearing.
