Lata Mangeshkar, legendary Indian singer, dies after multi-organ failure

Feb 6, 2022: Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar, with a prolific collection of songs and a voice recognized by over a billion people in South Asia. has passed away at the age of 92.

Her doctor Pratit Samdani told reporters on Sunday that the singer died “more than 28 days after multiple organ failure following COVID-19” at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

The singer was hospitalized on January 11 after contracting COVID-19. India announced two days of national mourning with state broadcaster Doordarshan, announcing that Mangeshkar would be laid to rest and the country’s flag would be flown at half-mast.

According to Indian media, Asian News International (ANI), Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital Trust in Mumbai on January 11 last month due to Covid-19. She was later admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ward after being diagnosed with pneumonia and remained on the ventilator for about 20 days.

According to the Indian media, doctors termed Lata Mangeshkar’s condition as serious. Dr. Pratit Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital informed that the singer is still in ICU and will remain under the care of doctors.

Mangeshkar’s voice has been heard on television sets, free waves and movie theatres across most of India, making her the defining voice of many generations and earning her the moniker “Nightingale of India”and the “Melody Queen”. Messages of condolence came immediately after the announcement of her death.

“I am anguished beyond words,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet. “She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerize people.”

Actor Anushka Sharma shared a heartfelt note to pay tribute to the late Lata Mangeshkar. Taking to Instagram on Sunday morning, the PK star dropped a monochromatic photo of the legendary singer; regarded as nightingale of India, and a touching quote to mourn her death.

“God speaks through beautiful voices,” wrote the 33-year-old actor in the caption of the photo.

While expressing grief over the great loss, Sharma shared, “Sad sad day for India as our nightingale leaves her mortal body.”

Mangeshkar’s popularity spread far beyond India. Her voive was celebrated not only in neighboring Pakistan and Bangladesh but also in some western countries. She was known for being soft-spoken and always dressed in a sari. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2001. The French government awarded her its highest civilian honor, the Officer de la Legion de Honor, in 2007.

Mangeshkar never got married. She is survived by four siblings, all professional singers and musicians.
