Mai Bhagi, the legendary subcontinential folk artist who earned the moniker Har Koil, died 35 years ago.
Mai Bhagi’s true name was Bhaag Bhari, and she was born in Diplo, Tharparkar district, Baghi TV. Her songs, which were also published abroad, were well received even by those who were unfamiliar with the trilingual language.
Her contributions to the realm of music will be remembered for a long time. The Pakistani government honoured her with the Pride of Performance Award in 1981.
Radio Pakistan also handed out a slew of medals and prizes, including the Shah Abdul Latif Bhattai Award, Qalandar Lal Shahbaz Award, and Sachal Sarmast Award.
On July 7, 1986, the sweetness that melted in the audience’s ears was permanently muted.
