LOS ANGELES: Friends star, Mathew Perry’s cause of death was revealed to be “effects of ketamine” according to the autopsy report.
On Friday, the Los Angeles County medical examiner confirmed the beloved actor had passed away because of “accute effects of ketamine”. The actor was found “unresponsive in the pool” on 28th October and declared dead by authorities at 54 years of age. At the time, the medical examiner ruled his death as an accident. According to the autopsy report, “drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine” were contributing factors in Perry’s death.

Mathew Perry rose to the peak of his stardom with the iconic role of Chandler Bing on Friends (1994-2004). Before his death, he was receiving ketamine infusion therapy to fight depression and anxiety, reported Variety. Ketamine is used to treat opioid use disorder. The actor has been vocal about his struggles with addiction and sobriety, which led to Perry setting up a sober living facility for other men with similar problems. In his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing (2022) Perry revealed how he became an alcoholic as a teenager later developing an addiction to pain medication after a skiing accident in 1997.

According to the actor, his addictions took a “major toll” on his life, even putting him in a coma at one point and costing him around seven million to get sober. Following his death, a foundation has been set up to help people struggling with addiction.
Speaking with Variety, Perry’s co-star and friend Jennifer Aniston said: “He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape“.
