According to Baaghi TV reports, fingers have started to be raised over the Modi Government’s treatment of its minorities.

United States Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, Sam Brownback, has observed while expressing a deep doubt over religious liberty in India, that if the situation in India remains unchanged, there will be an increase in persecution.

According to news agencies, a press conference via video-link was conducted regarding religious freedom, by the US Department of State. Sam Brownback addressed the conference and noted that historically India is the land of all religions but its current situation is alarming.

Brownback expressed concern regarding the casting of religious minorities as sacrificial lambs during the COVID 19 crisis and said it is not at all appropriate to blame them for it. He said they are noting the treatment of minorities in India over the corona crisis, and if the attitude doesn’t change they will be further persecuted.

He also said that there should be a high level pan-religious discussion in India. He asked that every citizen in India should have access to not just health but also other essential services, and that minorities should not be targeted over this situation.

Regarding this issue, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also issued the 2019 International Religious Freedom Report on Wednesday, 10th June 2020.

Prior to this, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom had also expressed concern over the attacks on minorities in India. The US Congress approved 2019 International Religious Freedom Report has noted that while talking in India to government officials, media, organisations for the promotion of tolerance, and private institutions, emphasis was laid on the need for the valid concerns and worries to be considered. American officials criticized sectarian rhetoric, and impressed upon the need for religious minorities to have full access to their constitutional rights.

It needs to be clear that India refused the request of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to travel to India for an on-the-ground evaluation of the problems faced by minorities there, on the contention that an international panel has no right to study the constitutional rights of Indian citizens.
