India, which prides itself on being the “world’s largest democracy”, is facing a growing shortage of space for truth-tellers. The Narendra Modi government has now not only started suppressing dissenting voices at the domestic level but has also intensified its campaign to block international media outlets.

According to recent reports, several foreign media outlets have been completely banned in India. These include China’s state-run Global Times and Xinhua News Agency, as well as Turkey’s famous TRT World. What makes these outlets special is that they often present critical and investigative journalism on sensitive issues within India, the same journalism that the Modi government does not like.

A large part of the national media in India is now playing the role of government mouthpiece, popularly known as ‘Godi Media’. These media outlets show what the government wants, and voices that question the government are either silenced as traitors, or banned altogether.

Journalists, social media activists and investigative reporters are either arrested or have cases filed against them. Many foreign journalists are denied visas or are deported. A true democracy is one where every voice is heard, every question is answered and dissent is respected. But Modi’s India has become a state where democracy exists only as long as you keep saying yes to the government. Criticize, and you are labeled an enemy of the country, a traitor to the nation, or a security risk.

This “media firewall” is not limited to simply shutting down social media websites, but is a broader plan under which the narrative is being completely controlled. The India that is being shown to the world is just one side of the truth, behind the curtain the truth is being hidden somewhere or suppressed elsewhere.
