Movie on Christchurch mosque attacks should focus on Muslim community, says Jacinda Ardern #Baaghi

Lahore, 14th June: New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said that the movie made on the Christchurch incident should focus on the Muslim community.

Jacinda Ardern said on Monday that the Muslim community of New Zealand should be the focus of any film made on the Christchurch mosque attacks.

The statement by the NZ premiere comes after some people raised objections to a movie focussing on her response to the bloodshed.

As per reports, a film called ‘They Are Us’ is being planned to be made about the attacks on two mosques on March 15, 2019, by a white male gunman, in which 51 people were killed.

The Hollywood Reporter magazine said that the film is an ‘inspirational story’ about Ardern’s response to the violence.

However, last week Ardern’s office said that she and the government have no involvement with the film.

When she was asked about it at a news conference, she said the Muslim community should be the focus of any film about the shootings, not her.

Ardern said, “This is a very raw event for New Zealand and even more so for the community that experienced it.”

She added that the stories from March 15 event need to be told and should be told by NZ’s Muslim community, ao they need to be the center of that.

She said, “I don’t consider my story to be the one that needs to be told.” She further said that it was not for her to say whether such a project should go ahead or not.

Jacinda Ardern also clarified that she was not consulted about the film and did not want to be seen in the film.

The title of the film is taken from Jacinda Ardern’s words that she said on the day of the shootings. The 40-year-old premier’s response united her country at that moment and she was praised globally.

According to media reports, New Zealander Andrew Niccol will write and direct the film which is not so much about the attacks but Ardern’s handling of it.

Jacinda Ardern’s role in the film will be played by Australian actress Rose Barney while the shooting of the film will be done in New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Muslims living in New Zealand said that this is the story of the tragedy that happened to Muslims. The focus of the film should not be on the government but on the Muslims living here.

It is pertinent to mention here that an Australian Brenton Tarrant, armed with high-capacity semi-automatic weapons, killed 51 people and injured dozens when he opened fire in the two mosques during Friday prayers in Christchurch.

It is to be noted that Brenton Tarrant was sentenced to life in prison without parole last year.
