NADRA establishment to be restored in Toronto
According to reports, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) establishment set to be restored at the Consulate General of Pakistan in Toronto, for better facilitation of Pakistani citizens settled in Canada.
According to reports, the news of the restoration was disclosed by the Pakistan High Commission in Canada, on Wednesday, during an online forum hosted by Mr. Abdul Hameed, the Consul General in Toronto. Responding to questions posed by the community members, the Consul General said that the decision to resume establishment operations in Toronto has been taken in “view of difficulties faced by the community members in accessing Nadra services”. He added that these facilities may include getting a new National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), passports, and/or uploading fingerprints for documents from remote locations, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan, Mr. Shahbaz Malik has said that the High Commission and its Consulates in Canada are “at the disposal” of the Pakistani citizens settled outside of Pakistan. He added that the concerned officials are accessible through phone, email, and/or social media via accounts operated by the mission and its consulates that work to “engage with the community in real-time”.
In addition, Mr. Malik said that although the government of Pakistan has started providing visa and passport services online, other services will have to be availed on-site by visiting the High Commission and its Consulates, respectively.

Moreover, addressing a Panel for “How Private is the Digital ID in Pakistan?”, Chairperson NADRA Mr. Tariq Malik said, “Digital [ID] is just a tool to make sure that everyone has an ID. When we talk about ID, it is [a] legal ID issued by the State… it establishes a social contract between State and citizen.”
He added NADRA found 1.5 billion people across the globe “have no ID and that was a moment of reflection”. He elaborated that having no ID in any form be it digital, on paper, or otherwise means that a person is invisible so if a woman does not have an ID she is invisible. These people cannot remain invisible forever. Mr. Tariq Malik further stated, “Our new database is built on two simple principles: Privacy by design, and Security by default”.
