Jan 3, 2022: In a significant development, the federal government on Monday said it would fight the case of journalist Nazim Jokhio if the family agreed to a “compromise” with suspect PPP MPA Jam Owais.
On November 3 last year, Nazim’s tortured body was found at Owais’s farmhouse in the Malir area of Karachi as he approached a group of endangered Hobara bustard victims in his hometown Ichhar Salar in Thatta. Filmed According to Afzal Jokhio, the victim’s brother, Nazim made a video of a road, which was blocked by foreigners who had come to hunt the Hobara.
According to the journalist’s brother “There was a verbal altercation with the man in Nazim’s car who snatched his mobile phone. Nazim then made another video which went viral on social media.”
The family have alleged that Sindh MPA Jam Awais of the PPP and his personal secretary were involved in the murder of his brother. Following a police investigation, several people, including Awais, were named in the FIR.
On Monday, the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights summoned IG Sindh and expressed frustration over the alleged lack of interest in the case. Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shirin Mazari said that when MPAs or MNAs are involved in a case, IG Sindh should be present. She further said that Sindh police seems to have failed in the case.
Mazari said the federal government had directed the Sindh police to provide security to the Nazim’s family, adding that if the state Nazim’s family agreed to a “compromise”, a case would be filed on their behalf. “If Nazim Jokhio’s family compromises, the state will take up the case and fight it … The case of Qandil Baloch is before us all,” she added.
PTI senator Saifullah Abro said that there are hundreds of such killings in Sindh, adding that the FIR was registered only when the victim’s family staged a sit-in on the national highway with Nazim’s body.
Expressing concern over the deplorable condition of the inmates, the committee decided to visit Adiala and Bhakkar jails.
