Jan 16, 2022: Pakistan registers more than 4,000 COVID-19 cases for second straight day, with the country’s positivity rate at 7.8% and nine more patients succumbing to virus in last 24 hours according to NCOC figures.

Figures from the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) show that for the second day in a row, Pakistan recorded more than 4,000 cases of covid 19 cases, as the country is in the grips of the fifth wave of the pandemic.

The spread of the omicron variant has come with an increase in transmission rate. According to the latest figures from the NCOC on Sunday morning, a total of 51,236 tests were conducted in the country during the last 24 hours, of which 4,027 tested positive. The country’s positivity rate is now 7.8 percent.

Meanwhile, nine more patients succumbed to the virus during the same period and the condition of 752 patients was stated to be critical.

Yesterday, Pakistan had reported 4,286 daily COVID-19 cases — the highest number of cases since August 25, 2021.

Pakistan’s positivity ratio also shot up to 8.16%, the highest since August 11, when 52,522 tests were conducted across the country, according to the NCOC data.

Meanwhile, Federal Health Department officials said that they expect the situation in Karachi to change in the coming weeks as the positive ratio could reach 50 per cent, leading to an increase in hospital admissions. Health officials also said the number of cases was expected to reach 6,000.
