NDMA conducts rescue operation in Chitral after glacial outburst flood

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has concluded Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) rescue operation in Chitral’s Golan Valley.

According to a spokesman, seven people were transported to safer places with the help of army helicopters who have been stranded for the past eighteen days.

Meanwhile, NDMA has started rescue operation following the land sliding at Buner Das Nullah, Chilas persons were under the landsliding debris.

Teams of Rescue 1122, Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, Police and officials of civil administration rushed to the venue.

The residents of 25 nearby houses have been shifted to safer places.

On 13th July, a glacial lake outburst flood in Golen Gol area of Chitral spread chaos in the region, sweeping away buildings, vehicles and livestock and cutting off the valley from the rest of the area.

The floods occurred after a glacier exploded in Azghor area following rain. A girl’s seminary, livestock, and vehicles were swept away as the floods inundated footpaths, roads, and river embankments.

The valley of Golan near Chitral city remained inaccessible by road for the 18th consecutive day on Sunday after it was hit by the glacial lake outburst flood that washed away its only mountainous road besides affecting about 500 households.
