KATHMANDU (BBC/AFP) – September 13, 2025: Nepal has appointed its first-ever female prime minister after days of violent anti-corruption protests left more than 50 people dead and forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.
Sushila Karki, 73, the country’s former chief justice, took oath on Friday evening as interim prime minister at a small ceremony in the presidential palace. President Ram Chandra Paudel congratulated her, calling her appointment a new chapter in Nepal’s history. Karki pledged to lead the country through a six-month transition before fresh elections.

Shortly after the swearing-in, President Paudel dissolved parliament on Karki’s recommendation and announced general elections for March 5, 2026. The move came as Nepal reeled from its worst unrest in decades, sparked by the government’s decision last week to ban 26 social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.
Although the ban was rolled back, protests had already gained momentum. Enraged crowds torched parliament and government buildings in Kathmandu, accusing political elites of corruption and nepotism. At least 51 people were killed and more than 1,300 injured in clashes with riot police. The unrest was further fueled by a viral “nepo kid” campaign on social media exposing the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ children.
The army was deployed to restore order, and security remains tight in major cities. By Friday evening, signs of normalcy began returning to the capital, with shops reopening and traffic resuming.

World leaders have taken note of the leadership change. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Karki on X, saying: “India is fully committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of Nepal’s brothers and sisters.”
Karki is widely respected for her clean image and enjoys support from Nepal’s younger generation, who played a central role in the demonstrations. Her interim leadership marks a historic moment for the Himalayan nation of 30 million, which has faced years of political turmoil since abolishing its monarchy in 2008.
