New York declares state of emergency after Ida triggers flooding
Sept 2, 2021: New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency as the remnants of Hurricane Ida have caused severe flooding in New York City and the Northeast United States.
“I’m declaring a state of emergency to help New Yorkers affected by tonight’s hurricane,” Hoechl tweeted Thursday, following the arrival of Ida, which struck Southern US on Sunday as a Category 4 hurricane, causing tornadoes and flooding as it swept North.
Nearly all New York City subway lines were suspended Wednesday as the National Weather Service issued at least five flash flood emergencies that stretched from west of Philadelphia to northern New Jersey.
Earlier in the night, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in response to Ida. Authorities were shocked by Wednesday’s hurricane damage from Ida, three days after a powerful hurricane hit southern Louisiana, as reconnaissance flights exposed all the communities devastated by the storms and floods.
Tornadoes spawned by the storm ripped through parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, images on social media showed. At least nine homes were destroyed in Mullica Hill, New Jersey.
New Jersey’s Newark Liberty Airport said on Twitter it was experiencing “severe flooding”. It said it resumed “limited flight operations” close to midnight after all flight activity was suspended late on Wednesday.

New York City also experienced flooding, with water flowing on subway platforms and trains with images on social media. The Metropolitan Transit Authority said the underground train service was “extremely limited” due to the flooding.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio urged people not to go out. “Please stay on the streets tonight and let our first responders and emergency services do their job. If you are thinking of going out don’t do it. Stay away from subways. Stay off the roads. In these heavy waters. Don’t go. Stay inside, “he said on Twitter.
