NEW YORK: Speaker of the New York (NY) City Council, Adrienne E. Adams, in collaboration with the American Pakistani Advocacy Group (APAG) hosted the ceremony to rename the corner of 109th Street and 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill, New York as the “Allama Iqbal Avenue”.
The ceremony took place on Sunday, the 6th of August, in the presence of the NY City Council Speaker, APAG, and members of the Pakistani American community in New York.

According to a press release of the APAG, the avenue is being renamed in honor of the Pakistani poet Allama Iqbal who was a leading figure in the “emancipation and founding” of Pakistan. As a writer, philosopher, and even political figure, Iqbal has always been revered by the people of the subcontinent. Remembered as one of the greatest Urdu language poets, Iqbal has left behind his legacy as a scholar and a lawyer.

According to the press release: “co-naming this street recognizes Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage whilst allowing Pakistani American to honor one of the most significant leaders of their country”.
