Recently, famous Hollywood actress Scarlet Johansson sued media giant Disney, Marvel Studios’ parent company, for going for the simultaneous release model for her film Black Widow, potentially costing her $50 million.

Disney is seen to have retaliated strongly, stating that the lawsuit is without merit and that this was particularly sad because it disregards the effects of COVID-19 on the world. The thing of note, however, is the fact that not a single one of Scarlett Johansson’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) costars, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, have spoken up in her support.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Fiege is stated to be “angry and embarrassed”, but even he has refrained from speaking publicly.

These actions – or lack thereof – stand in stark contrast to the outcry of support for Chris Evans and the accusations leveled against him for being homophobic by Elliot Page. However, no such support is seen for Johannson, one of the reasons for which could be that these actors might potentially continue their association with Disney.

Another thing of note is that this incident sheds light on the continual lack of equality between male and female actors in Hollywood. They are still paid less than their male counterparts, and it’s unlikely that Downey, Evans, or anyone else may even have had to take such actions had they be in her place.

This event has sparked another debate on the future of films and how the industry will be affected by the war between streaming services and theatrical releases.
