Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has stated that the Delta variant spreads to at least 5 people when 1 person is affected with it, emphasizing on the gravity of the situation.
Elaborating the lockdown announcement in Sindh during a press conference in Karachi, he said that last year there was severe pressure on local health facilities but their needs were met. He said that even in the second and third waves of Coronavirus, Sindh was better off than the rest of the country.
“Dr. Faisal, a member of the task force, pointed out the delta variant, explaining that out of 100 tests, 40 people tested positive, all of which were the Delta,” he said.
The Chief Minister said, “A month ago, there were 500 cases a day in Sindh province and now there are about 2,000. Karachi is the most affected city because it’s very densely populated.” He said that if 2,000 cases keep up in Karachi and it spreads to an average of five people, it will be very difficult to control.
He stated that health experts the world over are warning against the disaster the Delta variant may bring.
He said that with 2,000 cases coming to light daily, about 100 people would be admitted to the hospital each day, and if not stopped, the hospitals would not be able to cater to all the patients. He emphasized how contagious this variant was.
After the task force meeting, Asad Umar and Dr. Faisal Sultan were also informed of the decisions and were assured that the lockdown would be implemented. He clarified that a complete lockdown will not be imposed, with the necessary places being open.
The Chief Minister appealed to the people to help in making the lockdown a success. The lockdown will be held till August 8, and on August 9 it will be lifted.
“We are imposing lockdowns in an effort to maintain the capacity of hospitals. It is very important to stop its spread,” he said.
