Rare First Edition Harry Potter Book Auctioned for £80k

A rare first edition copy of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone has sold for £80,000 – converting to $111,756 USD – at a Leyburn Auction. The copy is said to be in “exceptional condition”.

The book was bought from a bookshop, Dillons, in Nottingham and was part of the first 500 hardcover books published for circulation in 1997, crediting JK Rowling as simply Joanne Rowling on its copyright page.

At first, it was estimated that at best, the copy would only sell for approximately £20,000-£30,000 by the Auctioneers Tennants at Leyburn but earned an incredible £80,000 instead, not accounting for the buyer’s premium. It was sold on Wednesday, being described as an “exceptional copy, first edition, first impression, case-bound issue”.

According to Tennants, 300 of the 500 first edition books were given to libraries but were subject to quick wearing out, damage and loss. This copy only stayed for a short while after its release at Dillons before being bought.

Reports state that this is one of the highest price marks ever for a JK Rowling book, with one similar copy even being sold for £125,000. In 2020, December, another volume of the same book sold for £68,000 at a Stratfordshire auction.
