Opening arguments in the George Floyd murder case

March 30 2021: Arguments began in the Drek Chauvin murder, trial in Minnesota Monday, with the video of George Floyd being murdered taking center stage.

Chauvin who faces 40 years for second-degree murder,  was shown to have kept a knee hold on Floyd for 9minutes. Which the defense chose to argue by saying the victim was intoxicated so use of force was warranted and Floyd’s death resulted from intoxication. The incident sparked national outrage and the trial is now being broadcasted for the American public and is being watched by Joe Biden.

“Nine minutes and 29 seconds. That’s how long that went on,” Minnesota state prosecutor Jerry Blackwell stated.

Officers initially apprehended Floyd for passing a counterfeit bill but the situation quickly escalated as the police tried to subdue him, with Floyd moaning and gasping and repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe” till he lost consciousness and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The arguments made by the defense include Chauvin’s military record, and his adherence to policing standards, saying he did what his training instructed him to. They further said the evidence will show a dangerous cocktail of methamphetamine and Fentanyl ingested, affected his organs and  led to his death.

The outcome of the trial will be a landmark moment in what direction America takes to preserve equality and justice irrespective of race according to popular opinion.

But Blackwell and Nelson both chose to keep the trial focused on the incident. “This case is about Mr. Derek Chauvin,” Blackwell  told the jury. “There is no political or social cause in this courtroom,” said Nelson.

Donald Williams, a 33-year-old martial arts instructor testifying for the prosecution and who was on the scene, said he told Chauvin at the time that his knee on Floyd’s neck was the equivalent of a dangerous “blood choke”. He opined, “The facts are simple. What killed George Floyd was an overdose of excessive force.”
