Pakistan Bar Council Assert Need for Free, Fair Elections

The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has expressed serious reservations regarding the election procedure of the Chief Election Commissioner, constituencies, and the distribution of seats. The PBC has said that free and transparent elections cannot be held in the presence of the present Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). It seems that the CEC has different rules for each political party or individual.

In the declaration issued by the Pakistan Bar Council, it has been said that there should be a level playing field in elections for all political parties. General elections cannot be free and fair in the presence of the present Chief Election Commissioner.
In a press release issued by the PBC, it was said that the CEC has allocated two National Assembly seats for his native Jhelum district, which has a population of 1,382,000. Meanwhile, Hafizabad district which has a population of about 1,320,000, only has one seat allotted.

Questions are being raised on the transparency of the election process. The conduct of the Chief Election Commissioner raises serious doubts about the integrity of the general elections and the PBC cannot turn a blind eye to these critical issues. The PBC has demanded that the Supreme Court take notice of these contradictions instead of validating every action of the Chief Election Commissioner.
In its declaration, the PBC has said that the Pakistan Bar Council firmly believes the main objective is not just holding elections. Rather, they should be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, providing equal opportunities to all stakeholders. The Pakistan Bar Council while announcing the convening of the Lawyers’ Convention said that the purpose of the convention is to ensure the conduct of free, fair, and transparent general elections, which is not possible in the presence of the present Chief Election Commissioner.
