ISLAMABAD (Daily Pakistan/ProPakistani) — October 31, 2025: Pakistan has approved the construction of a new international airport in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), a move aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and providing modern air travel facilities for citizens both at home and abroad.

According to reports by Daily Pakistan, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has initiated the technical feasibility study for the project, including site selection and preliminary evaluations, which are expected to conclude by December 2025. Once the technical and design approvals are finalized, the groundbreaking ceremony will be announced within the current fiscal year.

Officials described the project as a long-awaited development milestone that will enhance accessibility for overseas Pakistanis from Mirpur and surrounding areas. The new airport is expected to reduce dependency on Islamabad and other distant airports, making air travel faster and more convenient for millions.

The Mirpur International Airport is also expected to boost local economic growth, create jobs, and attract new investments in the region. Authorities emphasized that completing all approvals on schedule remains a top priority.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Pakistan Airports Authority has also announced a major digital transformation initiative, under which all airports across Pakistan will transition to cashless operations according to reports by ProPakistani.

Under this plan, passengers and staff will soon be able to access services and make payments through QR code–based digital systems, developed in collaboration with the State Bank of Pakistan.

The first phase of the cashless program will cover Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore airports, with the rollout expected in the coming weeks. The second phase will extend the system to Faisalabad, Multan, and Sialkot, followed by regional terminals nationwide.

A PAA spokesperson said the cashless initiative is part of Pakistan’s national fintech vision, promoting convenience, transparency, and financial security across airport operations. The system is also expected to prevent fraud, streamline transactions, and create a more efficient experience for travelers and vendors alike.

Both the Mirpur Airport project and the cashless airport initiative reflect Pakistan’s broader focus on modernization, infrastructure growth, and digital transformation within the aviation sector.
