Pakistan has Fought Terror Bravely: President Arif Alvi

While addressing the joint parliamentary session to mark the beginning of the fourth parliamentary year, the President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi said that the world has to believe that Pakistan has fought terrorism very bravely.

According to reports, the President was addressing a joint sitting of both Houses of the parliament as the fourth parliamentary year of the National Assembly began. It should be noted that under Article 56 (3) of the Constitution, a presidential address is mandatory for the commencement of the parliamentary year.

During the President’s address, the Houses were abuzz with noise and opposition members chanted anti-government slogans.

Prime Minister Imran Khan was also present on the occasion besides leader of the opposition Shahbaz Sharif, Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

President Arif Alvi began his address by congratulating the members of parliament on the beginning of the new parliamentary year and expressed the wish that democratic values and the “tradition of tolerance” flourish in Pakistan.

Referring to the changes taking place in neighboring Afghanistan in the middle of last month, the President said that the statements of the Taliban leaders were encouraging and that the world should play its role in the development of Afghanistan.

Regarding Pakistan’s sacrifices in the war on terror, he said that the world will have to accept that Pakistan bravely fought terrorism.

It may be recalled that the decision to convene a joint sitting of both the Houses of Parliament for the constitutionally required presidential address was taken in a meeting between Babar Awan, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs, and Asad Qaiser, Speaker of the National Assembly.

On the other hand, journalists and media employees have been subject to constant physical attacks outside and inside the parliament, along with forced dismissals from media outlets, and non-payment of salaries as they protest against the formation of the Pakistan Media Development Authority (PDMA) to regulate print, electronic and social media.
