Pakistan Releases Statement Regarding Abduction of Afghan Ambassador’s Daughter

The daughter of Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Najibullah Alikhil was “assaulted” and “man-handled” by an unidentified group of people in Islamabad on Friday. Pakistan’s foreign ministry has confirmed the torture of the Afghan ambassador’s daughter, saying “she was tortured while traveling in a rental car.”

According to a statement issued by the Pakistani Foreign Office (FO) on Saturday evening, “Islamabad police have launched an investigation as soon as the disturbing incident was reported. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies are in touch with the Afghan ambassador and his family and are fully cooperating with them on the matter.”

According to the Pakistani FO, the security of Afghan ambassador and his family is being further enhanced, law enforcement agencies are working to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

Afghan Ambassador’s daughter ‘abducted for several hours’

The statement reiterated that the safety of safari missions and the safety of diplomats and their families was a top priority and such incidents could not be tolerated.

Earlier, the Afghan Foreign Ministry (FM) condemned the “abduction and torture” of the daughter of the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan and expressed concern over the security of Afghan diplomatic staff in Pakistan, their families and others.

In a statement issued Saturday, the Afghan FM said the ambassador’s daughter, Silsila Alikhil, was abducted on Friday (July 16th) and held for several hours on her way home. Alikhil, who was abducted by “unknown individuals”, is currently in hospital for medical treatment.

According to a statement issued by the Afghan Foreign Ministry on its official Twitter handle, “Under international agreements, Pakistan has been asked to take immediate steps to grant diplomatic immunity to Afghan embassies, consulates and diplomats.”

The statement also called on the Pakistani authorities to identify the culprits as soon as possible and take action against them. Responding to media queries regarding the man-handling of the daughter of the Ambassador of Afghanistan to Pakistan, the Spokesperson stated:

As reported to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Embassy of Afghanistan in Islamabad, yesterday, the daughter of the Ambassador was assaulted while riding a rented vehicle. Immediately after this disturbing incident was reported, the Islamabad Police launched a thorough investigation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant security authorities are closely in contact with the Ambassador and his family and extending full support in the matter. While the security of the Ambassador and his family has been beefed up, law enforcement agencies are trying to trace and apprehend the culprits to be brought to justice.

It is reiterated that the safety and security of the diplomatic missions, as well as the diplomats and their families, is of utmost importance. Such incidents can and will not be tolerated.
