Islamabad – August 21, 2025: The Planning Commission of Pakistan has released the results of the country’s first-ever Digital Economic Survey, marking a significant milestone in national data collection and planning.
According to the survey, Pakistan hosts 7.1 million registered businesses, collectively employing over 25.3 million people across the country.

The provincial breakdown reveals:
- Punjab: 4.3 million businesses with 13.6 million employees
- Sindh: 1.3 million businesses with 5.7 million employees
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP): 1 million businesses with 3.9 million employees
- Balochistan: 300,000 businesses with 1.3 million employees
- Islamabad Capital Territory: 86,000 businesses with 600,000 employees
The report highlights sectoral distribution as well, with 2.7 million retail shops, 188,843 wholesale outlets, 825,254 service providers, 256,926 hotels, and 119,789 hospitals nationwide. Notably, out of the hospitals, 13,883 are government-run while 105,956 are privately operated.

In terms of infrastructure, Pakistan has 34 million residential units, 5.1 million commercial/economic buildings, and over 530,000 slum settlements, tents, or caves.
The survey also presents figures from the education sector:
- Schools: 242,616 (143,599 government and 99,017 private)
- Colleges: 11,568 (4,026 government and 6,942 private)
- Universities: 214 (123 public and 91 private)
- Madrassas: 36,331
The Planning Ministry emphasized that this digital survey has been carried out in alignment with the 7th National Population & Housing Census 2023, calling it a landmark step in digital governance and economic planning.
