Pamaal — A screenplay stirring debate on the life choices, decisions, attitudes, and actions of two characters, Malika and Raza, that are engaged in a modern day relationship. A society shaped rapidly by technological and cultural transformation, the tale of love and power unravels. Pamaal very delicately handles the traditions of society showcasing tension between convention and progress.

Directed by Khizer Idress, Pamaal unveils the love story of Malika played by Saba Qamar, and Raza depicted by Usman Mukhtar. The two characters are shown cherishing the idea of love but having very different interpretations of what it means or more importantly how to express it. Set against a backdrop of rolling green hills, Saba Qamar and Usman Mukhtar have given sharp performances. The wide cinematic backdrops add to the imagery of the series making it look like a surreal experience.

A very poetic launch with the first two episodes, Pamaal gave us a peak into the minds of characters. We see Malika writing the tale of the man of her dreams. And like a fairy tale, she manifests that man into reality. Sounds too good to be true? Yes, it is!

Next enters Raza, the so-called Prince Charming that needs a woman who loves him for him and not for his social status. Upon reading Malika’s story, he presents himself as the character she wrote about. He tells her how he shares the trauma and hardships of her story’s hero. Striking the right shades of grey, he manages to win Malika’s heart who trapped in her fantasy of love only sees what he shows her and accepts his proposal.

Though we get to enjoy the initial bits of perfect romance, Raza’s character slowly unravels with each episode. The insecurities, possessiveness, obsession and, centuries old standard for the “Wife” are what define Raza’s actual character for the rest of the episodes. Not dismissing the fact that he actually carries every bit of emotion for Malika, its his expression that suffocates Malika to the core.

The viewer once faced with the screenplay has important questions to answer. Like why do women choose to stay in emotionally or physically abusive relationships? And more importantly, why does society romanticize a toxic rage backed idea of love?
