Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) finds a technicality to increase insurance amounts for the Karachi plane crash victims that took place on May 22, 2020.
Sources reveal that PIA’s legal and insurance teams have found out a technicality through which they will be able to double the existing insurance coverage to the PK-8303 crash victims from existing 5 million per passenger to 10 million per passenger.
According to the details, this will be in addition to the 1 million per passenger already paid by the national carrier in terms of burial charges. The report has now been submitted to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) PIA, Arshad Malik for concurrence.
Earlier, in a meeting, Arshad Malik had tasked the concerned teams that insurance company should not follow the Carriage by Air Act, 2012 as they are not specifically mentioned in the agreement between the national carrier and National Insurance Company Limited (NICL). Instead, the company should account for inflation of the last 8 years which should make the amount double.
Sources privy to the matter say that CEO PIA will task PIA’s insurance team to press the company on the charges citing its commercial interest with the company.
It is to be remembered that on May 22, a PIA flight PK-8303 to Karachi crashed into a crowd near Jinnah International Airport, killing 97 people while two were miraculously safe.
