PM chaired a meeting on reforms and restructuring in PIA

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan chaired a meeting to discuss matters regarding the reforms and restructuring in the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

The meeting was attended by the Federal Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Senator Shibli Faraz, Advisor for Institutional Reforms, Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting, Lt. Gen. (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) PIA, Air Marshal Arshad Malik and other senior officials.

The CEO PIA briefed the PM about the investigation into the plane crash, including the identification of the dead and the relief package to the families.

A detailed road map for the restructuring and reform of the national airline and timelines for its implementation were presented to the PM.

Chief executive of the national carrier said that PIA is currently facing a monthly deficit of about Rs. 6 billion and the expenditure on salaries of 14,000 employees alone is Rs. 24 billion annually. He further mentioned that in the last 12 years ten chiefs of the national airline have been changed.

Meanwhile, the current chief executive has been unable to work for almost three months out of the 16-month tenure due to court cases. The PM was informed that due to these reasons, the process of institutional reform has been severely affected.

Air Marshal Arshad Malik apprised the PM of the strategies to be worked out regarding reorganization of the national airline, improving the financial discipline of the company, efficient utilization of the assets and other related matters. He said that the current situation has affected the airline industry around the world and reforms are underway in this regard.

Addressing the meeting, PM Khan said that the country’s economy was suffering due to coronavirus and the citizens are bearing a monthly loss of billions. He further said that the present situation demanded the process of reform and reorganization of the national airline should be expedited, which is losing billions of rupees on monthly basis.

Special attention should be paid to reduce the expenses of the company, increase the revenue and financial resources of the company and upgrade the aircrafts (fleet), said PM Khan while chairing the meeting.

The PM also directed that special attention should be paid to the best use of PIA-owned domestic and foreign assets through a clean and completely transparent process so that these assets do not become a further burden on the people.
