ITALY: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi invites Pope Francis to visit his country thus renewing negotiations of a papal visit following its cancellation back in 2017.

PM Narendra Modi shared images of his first private meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican. Soon afterwards he extended an invitation to the Pope to visit his country, India.

Currently the Indian prime minister is attending the G20 summit of major world economies in Italy, Rome.

According to analysts, this invitation is important as it oversees concerns regarding increase in discrimination and violence against religious minorities in India, including Christians.

Modi’s political party, the BJP, has been accused of possessing a pro-Hindu identity and agenda, which he outright denied at various occasions.

It is noteworthy that the last papal visit to India was in 1999 by the then Pope John Paul II.

The prime minister announced an invitation in a tweet saying he had “a very warm meeting” with Pope Francis, and “had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with him”.

An anonymous source reported to the Hindu newspaper that issues including ways to tackle poverty and climate change, along with other topics were discussed at the meeting. However, it is hard to say if matters of religious freedom and curbing violence were addressed at the meeting.

On the other hand, Pope Francis has frequently expressed his desire to visit India.

Back in 2016 he stated that he was “almost sure” that a trip to India would be arranged for the following year. However, despite his visit to neighboring countries Myanmar and Bangladesh, the leaders at Indian Catholic Churches failed to convince PM Modi to extend a formal invitation to the Pope.
