ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan will pay a two-day visit to Russia on February 23, with a high level delegation including cabinet members. On the invitation of Russian President Vladamir Putin, Prime Minister is reported to embark on a two-day maiden visit to Moscow.

According to statement issued by Foreign Office Spokesperson, Asim Iftikhar, Prime Minsiter Imran Khan will arrive in Moscow on the evening of February 23. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister will receive PM Imran Khan who will be given ‘Guard of Honour’ on arrival in Moscow.

The Foreign Office Spokesperson also briefed the media that the PM will have a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladamir Putin. The bilateral conference is one of the highlights of the visit. The two leaders will discuss the situation in Afghanistan, mutual and regional cooperation, including the growing pace of Islamophobia. The Prime Minister’s visit to Russia will help further enhance relations between the two countries.

During the visit, the countries are expected to sign a number of cooperation agreements and memorandum of understanding, including talks on gas pipeline, energy projects and a joint commission to review economic, trade and investment projects. There will also be a meeting between PM Imran Khan and the Grand Mufti of Russia.

PM Imran Khan is scheduled to leave for the homeland on Thursday night.

Sources privy to the matter that the visit is aimed at bolstering ties between Pakistan and Russia. Pakistan is looking forward to establish a multi-faceted partnership with Russia.

Vladimir Putin will not attend COP26 climate summit

It may be recalled that the visit of a Pakistani Head of Government to Russia is the focus of worldwide attention, especially amid Ukraine-Russia tensions.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Energy Minister Hammad Azhar, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Asad Umar, Abdul Razak Dawood and Moeed Yousuf will also accompany the PM on his visit.
