
ISLAMABAD: Two more new polio cases have been reported in the country, bringing the total number of reported cases to 53 this year.
According to the reports, two children from Balochistan and Sindh have been diagnosed with the polio virus. Apart from Balochistan, a three-month-old baby boy from Dukki and a four-year-old boy from Sindh’s Ghotki district have been infected with polio.

According to sources, the parents of the polio victims did not get vaccinated nor did they get anti-polio drops. It may be recalled that two new cases of polio were reported earlier in the month of May and three children were diagnosed with the virus in March.
At the provincial level, so far this year, 21 cases have been reported in Sindh, 18 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 11 in Balochistan and 3 in Punjab. In terms of polio, 2019 was the worst year when 146 new cases were reported across the country. This rate was the highest since 2014, which is why 2019 was declared the worst in terms of polio. Earlier, 306 cases of polio virus were reported in 2014.

Out of a total of 146 polio cases last year, 92 were recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone. There were 30 cases in Sindh and 12 cases in Balochistan and Punjab.
Similarly, 54 polio cases were recorded in the country in 2015, 20 in 2016, at least 8 in 2017 and 12 in 2018. The highest rate of polio cases during all this period was in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
