President of the European Parliament dead, aged 65

The president of the European parliament, David Sassoli, has reportedly passed away at the age of 65, in an Italian hospital.
According to reports, the news of Sassoli’s death was confirmed from a hospital in Aviano, Italy, on Tuesday. David Sassoli who had been hospitalized for what was reported to be a “dysfunction of his immune system” has been appreciated for his kindness post-humously.

Sassoli an Italian politician and former journalist served as the president of the European parliament, at the time of his passing. According to British daily The Guardian, prior to being hospitalized, Sassoli posted on social media to lament the ‘construction of walls’ against refugees (and other marginalized communities) in need of shelter. The late president reportedly wrote, “Our challenge is to build a new world that respects people and nature and believes in a new economy” based on the “wellbeing of all”.
In the wake of his passing, president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has expressed, that she is deeply saddened at the passing of Sassoli who was “a passionate journalist, an extraordinary president of the European parliament and above all a dear friend”. Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has also regarded Sassoli as “a man of institutions”.

It is pertinent to note that David Sassoli had been hospitalized in late December over ‘serious complications’ with his immune system. He had allegedly been having health troubles since September of 2021 after being treated for a severe case of pneumonia. Sassoli’s spokesperson Roberto Cuillo reportedly tweeted, “David Sassoli passed away at 1.15 am on 11 January at the CRO in Aviano( PN), Italy, where he was hospitalized.” Cuillo added that the details for the funeral will be shared soon.

Born in Florence, Italy, David Sassoli started his career as a journalist in a local newspaper from there he went on to work in an Italian national television broadcaster and eventually entered politics in 2007. Sassoli had been a member of the European parliament since 2009.
