The story of love between a Pakistani woman and an Indian man connecting through PUBG recently made headlines in India after a lawyer reported the couple to the authorities.

Having met through PUBG three years ago, Seema Ghulam Haider, 27, and Sachin Meena, 22, were reportedly living together in his home in India with plans to marry. Haider, 27, had traveled to India with her four young children through a Nepali travel agency and was living in the Greater Noida area of Uttar Pradesh for over a month, as confirmed by the local police.

According to BBC reports, the couple was arrested last week after which a local court remanded them in jail for 14 days. They also confirmed that the woman’s children are with her.

Since the story first broke, it has managed to ruffle many feathers and sparked widespread controversy surrounding the world of digital gaming, and the role it plays in fostering relationships across geographical borders and religious parameters.

In a conversation with BBC, Haider said that she “used to play PUBG for two to three hours a day” after her husband shifted to Saudi Arabia for work, which led to her meeting Sachin and eventually deciding to move in with him despite being married in Pakistan.

The Plot Thickens…

Haider informed police that her husband, Ghulam Haider, used to beat her and that they had gotten divorced. However, Ghulam Haider who shares three daughters and a son with her, denied the allegations. In turn, he has accused his wife of selling their home in Pakistan and fleeing with the children and jewelry.

According to a senior official of the Greater Noida police, the couple first met in Nepal in March where they stayed for a few days before returning to their respective countries. Later, Seema Haider along with her children traveled to Nepal on a tourist visa from where she took a bus to Delhi.

The official further confirmed the woman got the idea to enter India via Nepal from YouTube.

What led to the arrest?

The couple reportedly met with a local lawyer to seek advice about Haider’s residency in India when the lawyer informed the police, as confirmed by the Times of India.

Speaking with the newspaper, the lawyer behind the arrest said: “I was startled when I found that she and her children were carrying Pakistani passports”.

Sachin’s father has also been taken into police custody for sheltering Haider without an Indian visa. Despite the couple’s appeal to the Indian government to assist them in getting married, Ghulam Haider insists his wife has been “seduced” via PUBG and should be returned to Pakistan with their children.
