Putin says Russia would accept conditional handover of cyber criminals to U.S
Moscow June, 14, 2021: President Vladimir Putin has said that if Washington did the same for Moscow and Russia is ready to hand over both cyber criminals to the United States.
Putin made the remarks in an interview with state television on Sunday, ahead of a June 16 meeting with US President Joe Biden in Geneva. Relations between the powers that be are strained on many issues.
The Russian leader said he hoped the Geneva meeting would help establish bilateral talks and restore personal ties, adding that issues of mutual interest included strategic stability, Libya and Syria, and the environment. Are Putin also praised Biden’s “professionalism” when the United States and Russia agreed this year to extend the New START Nuclear Weapons Control Treaty.
The White House has said Biden will launch a ransom attack on Russia at the summit. Following the cyber attack, North American and Australian companies affected the operations of Meat Packer JBS USA. A Russian-linked hacking group was behind the attack last week, according to US sources familiar with the matter. Asked if Russia would be willing to search for cybercriminals and take legal action against them, Putin said Russia’s conduct would depend on formal agreements between Moscow and Washington.
He said that both sides would have to fulfill the same responsibilities.
“If we agree to extradite criminals, then of course Russia will do that, we will do that, but only if the other side, in this case the United States, agrees to the same and will extradite the criminals in question to the Russian Federation,” he said.
“The question of cyber security is one of the most important at the moment because turning all kinds of systems off can lead to really difficult consequences,” he said.
