Ranjit Singh statue vandalization: Court grants bail to main accused

Aug 20, 2021: A magistrate’s court on Friday granted bail to a man who allegedly smashed a statue of Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Lahore Fort.

The accused named in the case, Rizwan was produced in court today.

During the proceedings, the investigating officer of the case asked the court whether there was any objection against sending him on judicial remand. Meanwhile, the accused’s lawyer told the court that the police had completed their investigation and recovered a hammer from the possession of the accused.

He further appealed to the court that the provisions under which the FIR has been registered are bailable and requested the court to grant bail to the accused. The magistrate court then granted bail to the accused.

The accused was arrested on Tuesday and is an activist of the banned Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan.

In a video, the vandal can be seen chanting slogans and breaking the arm of the statute and then dismantling Singh’s bust from the horse altogether.

This is the third time that the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh has been vandalised since its unveiling in 2019 to mark the 180th anniversary of the ruler.

The first act of vandalism took place when two men hit him with wooden sticks, breaking one arm of the statue and damaging other parts. The attackers at the time were protesting against the removal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status by India.
