Spiritual leader and billionaire philanthropist, Prince Karim Aga Khan, passed away earlier this week at the age of 88 years. The news of his death was announced by his charity, the Aga Khan Development Network.

Prince Karim Aga Khan was the 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, who claim to be the direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). It is pertinent to mention that the Ismaili Muslims are a Shia Muslim sect who revere numerous imams including Imam Ismail, who passed away in 765 AD. In a statement issued on social media, Prince Aga Khan’s charity confirmed that he had “passed away peacefully” in Lisbon surrounded by family and loved ones.

Born in Switzerland and holding British citizenship, Prince Aga Khan was a close friend to British Royals, King Charles III and his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed Condolences

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief and sorrow over the death of Prince Karim Aga Khan. In a post on his X handle, he said Prince Karim Aga Khan was a man of vision, faith and generosity and his enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations. His contributions transcended borders, bringing hope and progress to communities in need.

Shehbaz Sharif said Prince Karim Aga Khan was a remarkable leader whose life was dedicated to uplifting communities across the world. Through his tireless efforts in poverty alleviation, healthcare and gender equality, he championed the cause of the marginalized, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.

The Aga Khan Development Network, which is Prince Aga Khan’s charity, runs hundreds of hospitals and educational institutions including organizing cultural projects in developing countries. Expressing condolences on his passing, the charity said: “We continue to work with our partners to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities across the world, as he wished, irrespective of their religious affiliations or origins”.

Concerning future prospects of the Ismaili community, the Aga Khan Development Network said the successor would be a male descendant and will be named soon. On Wednesday, Rahim Al-Hussaini was named the new Aga Khan, designated to be Aga Khan V and the 50th hereditary imam for the Ismaili Muslim community.

6 Lancers and HH Aga Khan

Prince Aga Khan was married to Princess Salimah, daughter of a 6 Lancers (6L) officer. The couple visited 6L in Multan where the Prince requested to be appointed as honorary Colonel Commandant which was agreed to. The prince was a kind and generous person who regularly sent money to 6L for the welfare of troops. The now Aga Khan, prince Rahim is son of princess Salimah and Prince Karim Aga Khan.

Princess Salimah was born at New Delhi, British India, as Sarah Frances Croker Poole. She is the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Eric Croker Poole who was an officer of 6 Lancers before the partition of Subcontinent.
