LAHORE: On the occasion of the 146th birth anniversary of ‘Shair-e-Mashriq’ (the poet of the East), Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, a public holiday has been declared across the country.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal, who received the title of Hakeem-ul-Ummat, created a spirit of self-reliance in the youth while teaching the nation a lesson of awareness. Through his poetry, he gave a message of unity to the Muslim Ummah. In a historic address in Allahabad in 1930, Iqbal awakened the Muslims of the subcontinent by presenting the concept of Pakistan through his universal poetry and political intelligence.

Iqbal’s address provided a clear direction and a distinct identity to the Muslims of the subcontinent in their pursuit of a separate homeland – Pakistan. Allama Iqbal dreamed of Pakistan and actively attempted to wake up the slumbering nation through his impassioned poetry, which is taught in academic institutes across Pakistan to date in honour of the national poet’s memory.

Earlier today, a grand ceremony of changing of the guards was held at Mazar-i-Iqbal, in which the troops of the Pakistan Navy took over the charge of duties on the occasion of Iqbal’s 146th birth anniversary.
