Remembering the Legend: Dilip Kumar and His Best Leading Ladies

Lahore, 7th July: Today the world lost the biggest legend of the entertainment industry, Dilip Kumar. Since 1944, the legend acted with almost all of Hindi cinema’s finest actresses.

Debuting his career with Jwar Bhata in 1944 to his last film Qila, in 1998, thespian Dilip Kumar has been lauded for his excellent dramatic work. The roles he essayed hold high standards in the entertainment industry till today.

In a career that spanned over five decades, Kumar acted opposite the best actresses of the industry.

Listed below are five main leading ladies that he looked best with:

1. Dilip Kumar and Madhubala

Legendary Dilip Kumar acted in only four films with Madhubala which include Naya Daur, Mughal-e-Azam, Tarana, and Amar. Dilip Kumar was linked up with many of his co-stars in the industry, but with Madhubala, he had a special connection. The two were reportedly about to get married when differences between the two appeared during the shoot of their movie ‘Naya Daur’ in 1957, hence, both drifted apart. During the shoot of K Asif’s Mughal-E-Azam in 1960, they did not speak to each other offset. However, onscreen, they remained one of the most romantic pairs in Hindi cinema.

2. Dilip Kumar And Nargis

Nargis Dutt is popularly known as ‘Mother India’, acted with Dilip Kumar in seven films from Anokha Pyar in 1948 to Deedar in 1951. The two also acted together in Kidar Sharma’s ‘Jogan’ in 1950. In 1951, the multi-starrer movie ‘Deedar’ included Ashok Kumar and Nimmi besides Nargis and Dilip Kumar. And of course, the most famous movie of all time ‘Andaz’, a love triangle between Kumar, Nargis and Raj Kapoor in 1949 stands out for its casting coup.

3. Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala

Like Nargis, Dilip Kumar acted with Vyjayanthimala in seven films which include, Devdas (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Madhumati (1958), Paigham (1959), Gunga Jumna (1961), Leader (1964), and Sunghursh (1968). Film Devdas, where Vyjayanthimala played his Chandramukhi was one of the significant movies of their career. Their on-screen chemistry was worth admiring and evident to all the viewers.

 

4. Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari

Dilip Kumar, the ‘Tragedy King’ and Meena Kumari, the ‘Tragedy Queen’ were known for their tragic and melodramatic films of the Indian cinema. However, in Azaad (1955) and Kohinoor (1960), the two appeared in cheerful roles. They also acted together in two more films, Footpath in 1953 and Yahudi in 1958.

5. Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu

The real-life couple acted in five films together. A long-time bachelor, Dilip Kumar married Saira Banu in 1966 at age of 44. The couple had an age difference of 22 years. All their films together were filmed after their marriage. They worked in Gopi (1970), Sagina (1974), Bairaag (1976), Jwar Bhata (1973) and Duniya (1984).
