ISLAMABAD – September 20, 2025: Dr Waqar Masood, a distinguished economist, former federal finance secretary, and caretaker federal minister, passed away on Thursday at the age of 75. He was also the uncle of Pakistan cricket team captain Shan Masood.
Family members said his funeral prayers will be offered in Islamabad after Maghrib today, followed by burial.

Dr Masood devoted decades to public service, holding key positions in the Government of Pakistan, including federal finance secretary. He played a pivotal role in shaping and implementing major fiscal and economic policies, earning respect across governmental, political, and social circles.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over his demise, noting that Dr Masood’s services to Pakistan would “always be remembered.” The premier prayed for the departed soul’s forgiveness, a high place in Jannat-ul-Firdous, and patience for the bereaved family.
