Rizwan Carries Bat with Masterful 100
11th February 2021, Baaghi TV: Pakistan, after having clean swept the Proteas on their return here after a long hiatus, are playing the first T20 International against the side today.
South Africa won the toss and elected to field, a policy that proved reasonably fool-proof in the last concluded Pakistan Super League.
Put in by South Africa, the hosts suffered an early setback. The Captain, and Pakistan’s batting supremo, Babar Azam, managed to run himself out immediately. He was followed soon after by Haider Ali, who departed after hitting a couple of lusty blows to demonstrate his ability as a power hitter.
Muhammad Rizwan had accompanied the skipper when the innings started and he found himself losing partners steadily as he stood rock solid at his end and continued to keep the score-board ticking as best he could. In the process he managed to score a century to applause from the pavilion that included the approval of the captain for a job well done, and relief that his unlucky dismissal left his deputy unfazed.
It may be noted that Muhammad Rizwan had shown promise in test cricket. First, it was when he was forced to step in as Captain on a difficult and unsuccessful tour of New Zealand due to Babar’s untimely injury, and then it was against South Africa, in the recently concluded series which included a Test hundred for him.
Pakistan has set South Africa a target of 170, which promises to be a tricky total to both defend and chase.
