Russia University shooting: 5 people killed and half a dozen injured

Sept 20, 2021: At least five people were killed in a shooting at a university in Russia on Monday, according to reports from the state investigative committee.

The committee said six more people were injured in a shooting at a university in the Russian city of Perm, according to the state-run RIA Novosti news agency. The university said in a message on its channel that the attacker entered the Perm State University campus on Monday morning and opened fire.

Reports cited that the assailant, who was later apprehended and killed at Perm State University, is identified as a teenage male and a student of the university located around 1,300 kilometers east of the Russian capital. Six people were also injured during the shooting.

Earlier, reports in international media said multiple people had been wounded and that some students and teachers were locked in classrooms while the footage showed people jumping from first-floor windows to escape the building.

“Some students and teachers have locked (themselves) into the classrooms,” the press service of the Perm State University said Monday, according to RIA.
The State Investigation Committee said the suspect in the shooting was a male student and had been identified. It was not immediately clear if he was a university student.
The accused resisted law enforcement officers during his arrest and was shot while being brought into custody, the committee said. The State Investigation Committee has taken charge and opened an investigation into the criminal murder.

The attacker, donned in dark attire, was striding up the path towards the while toting an assault rifle. Meanwhile, the motive of the killings is currently unknown.
