Russia warns of ISIS presence in Afghanistan

Russia says it is increasing the combat capabilities of its military base in Tajikistan and training local troops.

Moscow has warned that ISIS fighters are heading to Tajikistan’s neighbor Afghanistan.

According to reports, the security situation has deteriorated rapidly due to the withdrawal of US forces in Afghanistan, spoke Russian Defense Minister Sergei, who is currently present in Tajikistan for talks.

The withdrawal prompted Moscow to prepare for a possible major security challenge in the Muslim-majority Central Asian country.

Moscow has expressed its concern over the growing power of ISIS, especially in northern Afghanistan.

Sergei Shoygu said that ISIS fighters are going to Afghanistan from Syria, Libya, and many other countries.

“In some parts of Afghanistan, we are seeing a very organized movement of ISIS fighters,” the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him saying.

Sergei Shoygu called the US withdrawal “hasty” and said he was training Tajik military personnel at Moscow, Russian military universities, and centers attached to its military bases in Tajikistan.

“We are providing all the necessary facilities for military training,” he said.

“We are focusing on a plan to further strengthen our base’s combat capabilities and jointly repel possible militant incursions,” he said.

The senior Russian diplomat said Moscow sees the Taliban’s control of northern Afghanistan as a greater security threat because it sees it as more extremist.

Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan will hold joint military exercises next week near the Tajik border with Afghanistan, where the Taliban have achieved great success and claim control of 90 percent of the country’s border area.
