Safoora Zargar granted bail by Delhi HC

Tuesday, June 23rd: According to the report of Baaghi TV, a hearing was held in the Delhi High Court on the bail application of Safoora Zargar, a key member of the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act at Jamia Millia Islamia University.

The court granted conditional bail to Safoora Zargar, saying she would co-operate in the police investigation, would not try to destroy any evidence and would not leave Delhi. Will contact the police at least once in 15 days.

Safoora, who is facing hardships of incarceration under the Prevention of Illegal Activities Act, is pregnant and undergoing treatment, which is considered very sensitive, according to the South Asian Wire. During the hearing of Safoora’s petition in the bench of Justice Rajiv Shakadhar, Solicitor General Tshar Mehta sought adjournment of the hearing which was granted by the court and the hearing was adjourned for one day till June 23.

According to the South Asian Wire, four attempts have been made to bail Safoora since she was arrested on April 10, the first time a bail application was filed on April 18, which was imposed by the UAPA. The bail application was re-filed on May 2, while a third petition was also filed on June 4, which was dismissed. The Delhi High Court today granted bail.

Safoora Zargar, a research fellow at Jamia Millia University in Delhi and media coordinator of the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), had staged a massive protest against the Indian government against the Citizenship Amendment Act passed in December last year.
