Islamabad: Retired Test cricketer Saqlain Mushtaq has said that renowned left-hand batsman Saeed Anwar was a maestro of playing off-spin bowling, and no left-hand batsman played spinners better than him.

He said in a video on his Youtube channel that he played a few matches against him but he bowled to him in the nets very often, and it was very difficult to beat him and to get his wicket.

Saeed Anwar played in 55 Tests and 247 ODIs and captained Pakistan in 7 Tests and 11 ODIs. Saqlain, who is head of International Player Development at the High Performance Centre of the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) has said that Saeed Anwar was very talented and he doesn’t think that there is any left-hander who could play off-spin better than him.

Saqlain Mushtaq, who is credited with the invention of the “doosra”, said that the other left-hand batsman who played off-spin well was Indian cricketer and current President BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Saurav Ganguly. He held a mastery over off-spinners due to which he could adopt an attacking approach against them whenever he liked with cut, inside-out, and sweep shots. Saqlain said Ganguly was brilliant and brave and played well on turning wickets.

Saqlain said West Indies legend Brian Lara, who debuted in 1990 against Pakistan, was a great player of spin, and he saw him once in an attacking mode against Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan. Saqlain said that Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakarra also played spin very well.

Saqlain said playing off-spinners against left-handers was a strategy that is used to this day. However, he said that these players (Saeed Anwar, Saurav Ganguly, Brian Lara, and Kumar Sangakarra) were a few left-handers who handled off-spin very well and also created trouble for the bowler. He said that the reason behind their success was their self-confidence and courage. He said that according to his guess they were brave and had full faith in their own abilities. It never occurred to them to consider that playing off-spin might be difficult for them.
