Saudi citizens took to social media to express their disapproval of the Pakistani Foreign Minister, Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, for sitting in a manner that is “the height of foolishness and ignorance”. 

According to reports, taking to the social networking website Twitter, the Saudis expressed their outrage over what they consider to be an arrogant posture. The Saudi social media users claimed that during the recent meeting of the Pakistani FM with his Saudi counterpart, the former presumed a sitting position considered “insulting” to his counterpart.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) citizens have argued Qureshi’s posture during his meeting with Nawaf bin Said-al-Malki in Islamabad was “offensive”.  

Based on the viral image from the diplomatic meeting, FM Qureshi can be seen sitting with one leg crossed over the other and pointing in Al-Malki’s direction. According to the Saudi Embassy in Pakistan, the Ministers met to discuss the current events in the region and to “review bilateral relations between two brotherly countries”.

One social media user wrote, “Pakistani foreign minister receives Saudi ambassador in Pakistan with unmatched hospitality”. 

A social media wrote that unless there is a medical reason behind FM Qureshi’s posture, his actions are the “height of impudence and foolishness, and ignorance of the basics of diplomatic protocol”.

Another user wrote, “Rude, thoughtless and undiplomatic behavior of the [Pakistani] Minister of Foreign Affairs towards the [Saudi] ambassador… [I] admired how he kept silent about this insult!”

Meanwhile, other users have compared the “insulting” way Qureshi received Al-Malki to his “polite” demeanor while receiving other officials.

It is pertinent to note that the countries, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, have shared a deep diplomatic and military tie in the past. In recent years, their relationship has gotten strained over Islamabad’s refusal to “contribute troops” for the Yemen war.
