Kevin Yorn, Johansson’s lawyer told Variety: “We do not take these things lightly. Per our usual course of action in these circumstances, we will deal with it with all legal remedies that we will have”. According to reports, the advertisement has since been taken down.

According to Variety, the ad started with a behind-the-scenes clip of Johansson from the set of Marvel’s Black Widow (2021). In the ad, the Asteroid City (2023) star says: “What’s up guys? It’s Scarlett and I want you to come with me…” before the screen transitions to feature AI-generated images resembling her and an imitation of her voice promoting the app. The fake narration continues: “It’s not limited to avatars only. You can also create images with texts and even your AI videos. I think you shouldn’t miss it”.

Meanwhile, the advertisement continues to give out a disclaimer in fine print that images produced by the agency (Lisa AI) have “nothing to do with this person”.

It is pertinent to mention, that Johansson is not the only actor to call out the use of her name and likeness by AI. Previously, veteran actor Tom Hanks took to Instagram to caution his fans about a dental plan that used an AI-generated image of him for promotional purposes. Hanks wrote: “Beware! … I have nothing to do with it”.

Prior to this, Johansson went through a similar experience. In 2018, she spoke to the Washington Post about her use of computer-generated “deep fakes” where women’s faces were artificially added to pornographic videos. At the time, she had said: “Nothing can stop someone from cutting and pasting my image or anyone else’s onto a different body and making it look as eerily realistic as desired”.
